Ode to a Miata
by Steve Morris
So long ago and yet so near
the moment I first saw you clear
across a lot of lesser cars
You stood apart as moons from stars
And then I sat behind the wheel
as engines revved and tires squealed
It was as if our souls were matched
In that first instant, we were attached.
Eight years went by in smokey haze
cross mountain roads and sunset's blaze.
I drove you hard. I drove you fast
like miles lost our years did pass.
Till that fateful day of dark and light
The Equadorian who spent the night
Into his hands I passed your keys
And from his touch your engine seized.
I know I cannot blame the man
He had no sway o'er oil pans
Your life's blood as oil leaked
Forcing heat to rise and friction peak
until your heart once strong and fierce
was silenced forever
and my soul was pierced.
Yet even in death you served the cause
like Arthur's Sword in Mordred's claws
Though no longer running as fast as wind
You lay down life that Siren might live.
We smashed you to pieces with feet, fists, and bats
then hauled off your carcass and sold it as scrap.
And what made us deal you this last awful blow
'cuz filming expenses are deductible, you know.
Yet as long as I live I'll remember your purr,
as you wove through the traffic like satin through fur
And as I lie in bed, watching night turn to day
I remember with longing
how we used to play.
